Braai Culture

What makes a Braai so unique is not only it's history or cultural importance. The defining factor of a Braai is ultimately the people  and only after that, what goes on the braai. A Braai is all about community and I will aim, through this project to capture the most important aspects of a Braai. The interaction between friends and family. The fireside conversations. The telling of jokes and stories. Generational knowledge passed on from elders.

Documenting the differences between communities will also form an important part of this project. Not just the different ways a Braai unfolds but also what goes on the Braai. The vast differences in South Africa is not only limited to race and ethnicity but also geographically. The project proposes to capture Braai culture throughout South Africa. Travelling across the country to document the unique differences of this beautiful country.

Although South Africa not being the biggest country it will still take more then a day to travel from end to end. I aim to document everything from big cities to small villages. Small dusty towns to the bustling city. Coastal beauty to bushveld serenity.

I aim to achieve a better understanding and expression of Braai culture in South Africa. Documenting the various cultures and differences of our people but also highlighting our similarities within those differences.
